Washington Cheesemakers take big awards at the National Cheese Conference
Washington state takes home prestigious medals at the 2018 national cheese conference in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Seattle, WA. (July 27, 2018) – The American Cheese Society is regarded as the leading organization supporting and promoting American-made cheeses.  The organization provides the cheese community with educational resources and opportunities while encouraging the highest standards of cheese making. With over 2,000 cheese entries 6 Washington cheesemakers brought back some hardware:

Beechers Handmade Cheese (Seattle, WA)
Fresh Unripened / Cheese Curds, All Milks category: Flagship Curds 2nd place
American Original / Mixed or Other Milks category: Flagsheep 3rd place
Cheddars / Wrapped in Cloth, Linen, Aged 13+, All Milks Category:  Flagship Reserve 2nd place
Flavored Cheeses / Cheddar with Flavor Added, All Milks category: Marco Polo Reserve  3rd place
Sheep’s Milk Cheeses / Aged 60+ Days category: Sheep Sheep 3rd place

Cherry Valley Dairy (Duvall, WA )
Flavored Cheeses / Butter with Flavor Added, All Milks category: Herbed Rose Butter 1st place
Butters / Unsalted with or without Cultures, Cow’s Milk  Category: Unsalted Cultured Butter 1st place
Butters / Salted with or without Cultures, Cow’s Milk category: Gary Salt Butter 2nd place

Cherry Valley Dairy was also honored with the “Boss of the Brunch Award” for their Herbed Rose Butter

Ferndale Farmstead Creamery (Ferndale, Wa)
Italian Type / Mozzarella Types, All Milks Category: Scamorza 3rd place
Smoked Cheeses / Smoked Italian Styles, All Milks category:  Smoked Scamorza 3rd place

Mt. Townsend Creamery (Port Townsend, WA)
Soft-ripened / Camembert, Cow’s Milk category: Cirrus 2nd place

Twin Sisters Creamery (Ferndale,Wa)
Flavored Cheeses / International with Flavor Added, All Milks category: Farmhouse White with Whole Peppercorns was awarded 2nd place.

Willapa Hills Cheese (Chehalis, WA) 
Blue Mold with a Rind or External Coating, Cow’s Milk Category: Big Boy Blue was awarded 3rd place.

Unlike other cheese competitions, where cheeses are graded down for technical defects, the American Cheese Society’s competition recognizes cheeses for both their aesthetic and technical quality.

All but 1 winning creamery are members of the Washington State Cheesemakers Association that supports our state cheesemaker’s and promotes the continued growth and awareness of the cheesemaking industry.  We are a member-supported non-profit and membership is open to cheesemaker’s, industry professionals, and fellow cheese lovers everywhere.
