Come learn about cheese, cheesemakers, and cheesemaking in Washington state! This fun and delicious educational seminar will be led by Courtney Johnson, Executive Director of the Washington State Cheesemakers Association. Dr. Johnson will talk about the wide world of Washington cheese, explain how cheese is made, and lead a panel discussion featuring four local cheesemakers. The panel will include a guided tasting of cheeses made by each of the cheesemakers. After the seminar there will be a short meet-and-greet session with the possibility to buy cheese directly from the makers.

The Cheesemakers

  • Acme Farms Cheese (Deming) is a small, artisanal creamery making French-style cheeses from local cow’s milk.
  • Appel Farms Cheese (Ferndale) is a family-owned and -operated farmstead creamery making a variety of Dutch- and European-style cow’s milk cheeses.
  • Ferndale Farmstead (Ferndale) makes Italian-style cheeses with the motto of ensuring quality on their farmstead creamery “from seed to cheese.”
  • Twin Sisters Creamery (Ferndale) is a husband-and-wife cheesemaking team creating original-recipe cheeses from locally produced raw, cow’s milk.

The Presenter

Courtney Johnson, PhD, ACS CCP, CCSE, is Executive Director of the Washington State Cheesemakers Association.
